Lionel Messi, captain of Argentina, is pictured holding the Copa America trophy in 2021.
Predictions made by pundits
James Benge of CBS Sport made a second attempt at “predicting how things would shake up in Qatar.” In this attempt, he predicted that Argentina and Lionel Messi will gain their “revenge” for losing to Germany in the 2014 final by defeating Germany. Benge predicts that the Argentines will win the cup this year with a 2-1 victory on December 18 and that Lionel Messi will “write himself into the history books” for his performance. The Germans won the cup with a 1-0 victory after extra time eight years ago. Earlier this year, when Benge made his first attempt at making predictions, he had Brazil “conquering all” by defeating England 2-0 in the final match.
Joachim Klement, a stockbroker at Liberum Capital Ltd. based in London, constructed what he calls a “proprietary econometric model” in order to forecast the countries that will emerge victorious in the World Cup competitions in 2014 and 2018. With a perfect record up to this point, who does he think will emerge victorious in 2022? Klemen’s calculations suggest that Argentina will emerge victorious, and that they will do it by defeating England in the championship match. “Messi will win something that [Cristiano] Ronaldo never has and Argentina will celebrate its first World Cup title in 36 years,” he declared at the time. “Messi will win something that [Cristiano] Ronaldo never has.”
According to Graham Ruthven, who writes for The Sporting News, Didier Deschamps’s France will be among the favorites once again in 2022, despite the fact that they won the championship in Russia in 2018. However, if the French team faces Argentina in the round of 16, “the curse of the defending champions” may come true for them. Ruthven believes that Spain will emerge victorious over England in the championship match. During the European Championships, there was a general feeling that Spain were “near to lifting a trophy,” and currently, they “seem prepared to victory in Qatar.”
Kevin Chroust remarked on “The Analyst” that “according to our predicted tournament model,” France has continuously been the most likely side to win the World Cup. This prediction was based on the model that Chroust and his colleagues developed. The French national team is “still our favorite” to win the most prestigious trophy in football.
